Activity: The Mighty Quapaws Apprenticeship Program

Geographic location: Lower Mississippi River and its tributaries (White, Arkansas, Yazoo, Sunflower, Big Black, etc)

Brief activity description: The Mighty Quapaws is an apprenticeship program for Mississippi youth, including canoeing, guiding and canoe building. "Respect of the River" is one of our major goals, which involves understanding and caring for the river. We target rural youth, most of whom come from highly distressed neighborhoods and have little to no experience with the big river and its tributaries.

Primary goals or focus:

  • Water quality improvement
  • Education/information sharing
  • Other (please specify):
  • Rural Sustainability

Projected outcomes/impacts, if known: Educate Mississippi youth to assist in understanding the functioning of the river as a continental system which flows through their "backyard" (the free-flowing 440 miles on the Western border of the state), so that they will better care for the river & its tributaries, and grow up to be responsible citizens/tenants of the river basin.

Activity type:

  • Education
  • Demonstration
  • Implementation

Scale of activity:

  • Community-level
  • Watershed
  • County
  • State
  • Sub-basin
  • Regional
  • Other (please specify):
  • all from the perspective of the river! (on the river)

Lead organization(s)/organizer(s): Quapaw Canoe Company

Timeline/duration: Ongoing
Projected or real startup time: In operation since 1998
Projected ending time or goal deadline: Perpetual

Funding sources:

  • Foundations
  • Individual donors
  • Other (please specify):
  • Income from guiding services

Follow-up activities that will/might result from this activity: Adult rural Mississippians who will be future "river-keepers" for the Lower Miss.
