Activity: Watershed Plan Implementation in the Long Lake/Brill River Watershed

Geographic location: Brill River watershed, headwaters of the Red Cedar River in NW Wisconsin (eventually drains to the Lower Chippewa and the Mississippi)

Brief activity description: A multi-year, multi-party project to reduce runoff and enhance natural resources in a headwaters ecosystem. Stormwater BMPs, demonstration sites, educational materials, and seminars complement a regulatory approach to managing impervious surface and runoff creation.

Primary goals or focus:

  • Nutrient reduction
  • Sediment reduction
  • Wetlands restoration
  • Water quality improvement
  • Policy development
  • Development/implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs)
  • Education/information sharing
  • Organizing/networking/coordinating
  • Monitoring

Projected outcomes/impacts, if known: Largely focused on phosphorus management, the project aims to slow eutrophication in a headwaters lakes system. To date, stormwater BMPs have been installed at a publicly accessible location along with interpretive materials. Raising awareness of watershed concepts and nutrient/sediment management through mailings and website.

Activity type:

  • Research
  • Policy
  • Education
  • Demonstration
  • Implementation
  • Technical assistance
  • Extension

Scale of activity:

  • Community-level
  • Watershed
  • County

Lead organization(s)/organizer(s): Long Lake Preservation Association (http://www.longlakellpa.org), Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary, UW Extension Center for Land Use Education

Other partners and participants: Towns of Long Lake, Madge and Birchwood, Wisconsin; Washburn County, Wisconsin; Wisconsin DNR

Timeline/duration: Began in 2002, anticipating an indefinite duration
Projected or real startup time: Project planning 2002-2005, implementation 2005-present
Projected ending time or goal deadline: Indefinite

Funding sources:

  • State government
  • Research institutions/University
  • Members
  • Individual donors

Follow-up activities that will/might result from this activity: Ideally, additional headwaters systems will replicate nutrient budgeting and management efforts completed in the Long Lake area. Future efforts could bring together multiple watersheds in the Red Cedar system and play a role in a future TMDL process for the entire Red Cedar basin.
